The Global Mennonite History Series is Available Again from Pandora Press (September 1, 2026)

Following their co-publication by Good Books and Pandora Press upon their initial release over 20 years ago, the five volumes of the Global Mennonite History Series have been foundational in establishing a worldwide sense of historical consciousness for Mennonites and other Anabaptists groups. The series gave students, scholars, laypeople, and other interested readers a broad sense of how Mennonite life and thought had gone global, and several volumes received broad acclaim in various periodicals and academic journals. 
To this day, they remain the most comprehensive expression of history-writing by and about Mennonites from a global perspective, and yet the series has not been widely available in print format for some time. Through a series of negotiations with the copyright holder (Skyhorse Publishing, which purchased Good Books), Pandora Press has been able to secure worldwide publication rights to the whole series. This is thanks to the generous support of the Mennonite World Conference (who had also made the books available for free download). It will greatly benefit the global Mennonite community to have access to the following five volumes, now available in paperback on all Amazon platforms.

The Mennonite World Conference describes the series in the following way:

This fresh offering of history is the first time some of these churches have cooperated in telling their story in their own voice. Themes in one book differ from those in another. This telling of the story of Mennonite and Brethren in Christ churches is intended ‘to stimulate the renewal and extension of Anabaptist Christianity worldwide.’
This series helps readers to understand what the North American religious magazine Christian Century calls ‘the shift in church energy, leadership and numbers from North to South, from developed to developing nations.’
The Global Mennonite History Series was initiated by Mennonite World Conference at its thirteenth global assembly in Calcutta, India in January 1997. The series was guided by an international organizing committee whose members represent all five continental regions.”

C. Arnold Snyder writes in Mission Focus 19 (2011):

As I have worked with and pondered these volumes of our global history, I have been strongly impressed by the importance of location and perspective in the telling of our history. I know that this is an historical commonplace, often-repeated. Nevertheless, I have been surprised by the actual results of having the history of our denomination narrated by church members from around the globe. I firmly believe that we will be able to function as a global church only insofar as we enable all global voices to be heard, and genuinely accept their legitimacy. These volumes of history are emphatically particular and located in the experience of people in specific places, as they have lived out the Gospel in their times and places. Paying attention to the voices speaking in these volumes can help us bring together the particular and universal elements that make up our complex global church. But this is a difficult task.

It seems to be an inevitable feature of human existence that we create what we believe to be “universal” structures for the narratives of our lives. We do not do this arbitrarily, but rather because certain events impact our lives and our consciousness so deeply that we cannot help but take their meaning to be “global” in scope. So it is that in the European and North American contexts, the scientific revolution, the Enlightenment, the democratic revolutions, the industrial revolution, the first and second world wars, and the Cold War are all matters of “global” significance. We call them “world” events. It is interesting to note how true, and also how untrue, this perception is, when we read these volumes together.

I find it amazing just how wide and varied are the cultural expressions of our common Christian faith, and how particular and limited our own voices remain. The Global Mennonite History series pushes us toward a fundamental humility, restraining our idolatrous impulse to proclaim our particular cultural voice as the voice of God…
